REVIEW OF VISIT SUMMER 2012

Shop Museum at Wrentham  MAY

Fifteen members of the Society meet at Wrentham to visit the shop owned by Mr & Mrs Carter. The Shop which is a replica of a village shop pre 1970 was packed with goods reminding members of their childhood days, and frequently heard was, “My mum had one of those”

This fascinating visit was very much enjoyed by those taking part, and Mr & Mrs Carter were thanked for allowing the visit.

The Rows" in Great Yarmouth   JUNE

Ten members were met at St. Nicholas Church, Gt. Yarmouth by Maurice Joel for a instructive walk/talk on the Rows of Gt. Yarmouth,
We commenced in Northgate Street at Row. 1 (numbers shown on blue plaques ),and followed the numbers stopping to hear the stories of Body Snatchers Row (6) performing circuses later Lacons Brewery (13) and the fact that Palmers shop because of the many years it has traded in Gt. Yarmouth has within its building retained some of the rows. The rows were built on a criss cross patern all running down to the river, this enabled rubbish etc to be swept down and into the river and the prevailing winds to clear the air. Although the membership turnout was poor,(probably because of an early start) this was an interesting evening and Maurice expressed a wish to visit the society for a further talk and slide show.

Studio Film Theatre, Sparrow's Nest  JULY

Twenty four members of the Society met at the Sparrows Nest Cinema Clubfor a most entertaining evening of films.
Starting with a very humorous weather forecast we travelled through a series of films
depicting various industrial processes which occured in the town, including rush matting, Lowestoft porcelain and  work on the trawlers and drifters and  fish docks.

Years gone bye showed how agriculture had changed from Suffolk horses through steam to the present large tractors.

More up to date was The Players in Robin Hood and a visit to the now closed Museum on Wymondham Railway Station. We would particularly like to thank, Ron in the box, Marion, who made the tea and David
