BLUNDESTON – MORE VILLAGE HISTORY
A REVIEW
The recently published local history book Blundeston – More Village History is
the long awaited follow up to Blundeston
– A Village History which sold out very soon after its publication in
2007. Even before Blundeston – A Village History was finished the authors, local
historians Olwen Offord and iris Mayes, realised that they still had a great
deal of information about the village and its inhabitants that could not be
squeezed into the first book and decided that a second volume was needed to
share this information and research some aspects further.
The result is Blundeston
– More Village History. The book
runs to over 200 A4 pages containing more than 200 photographs and
illustrations (many of them never before published), local family trees and
information about families and individuals connected with the village (and
neighbouring ones).
Meticulous research has resulted in the compilation of
detailed family histories of people connected with the village during the last
400 years. These include the landed
Bacon, Lyson, Steward (of Steward & Patterson), Thurtell and Woods
families. Fascinating links are made
between some families and Sir Francis Bacon, the poet George Crabbe, Lowestoft
Porcelain, a Norwich Mayor whose son was hanged for murder and a young man who
was killed by pirates in Borneo.
Investigations have revealed details concerning the lives,
deaths and final resting places of village men who died in two World Wars and
are remembered on the War Memorial.
There are also World War II memories of adults who served their country
and survived, as well as those of villagers who were children at that time.
The book includes a comprehensive history of, and guide to,
St Mary’s Church. It also contains a
full list of every person’s names on gravestones and memorials in the church
and churchyard, with all their relevant details. Accurate plans show the position of all these
commemorations.
Sources used for the wealth of well-researched information,
family histories and biographies in the book include the usual Internet and
Ancestry sites as well as census documents and first hand details and
photographs from living descendants.
This book is not only of interest to those with connections to
Blundeston, but also invaluable to local historians and the growing number of
people tracing and investigating their own family histories.
Copies are available from Iris Mayes at ‘Traddles’, Pound
Lane, Blundeston, Lowestoft, Suffolk NR32 5AY for £14 (plus £3.50 p&p within
the UK) and the profits from the sales will go towards the Village Church.
